First Day of School!
Today was our first day of school here at Kibogora. No tardy bells rang, we didn't go back to school shopping, and the teacher already knows all her students' names backwards and forwards. Yet it was still school.
The mission compound actually has a small two room schoolhouse, with its own chalkboard, desks, books and everything!
Some of the perks?
- Some of us went to school in our pajamas ~ but we're not saying who.
- School let out at 1:30 today.
- We get to go cheer up some adorable young hospital patients this afternoon.
- The teacher brought a cold bottle of Coke and an Orange Fanta to each of her students today - and they got to drink it at their desks.
- We are studying a REALLY cool foreign language! (KinyaRwandan....duh!)
- Our girl student came with dyed hair (bright red underneath!) and didn't get sent home. Because, you know, flying 2,000 miles home seems a bit extreme for a little hair dye.
- The dogs get to come to school with us!
Some of the not-so-greats?
- No other girls were here to notice the new hair do.
- No art class for Sam - although he still is drawing on everything, so maybe that counts.
- Our walls are painted a kinda gross yellow color. We might need to call in Sherwin Williams for a consult.
- Their math teacher isn't very, um, educated in her field.....so she opted to bring cd's of a real math teacher for her students to watch. Not fun to watch a class instead of doing it LIVE.
I have been following you for a while and unable to comment. I am a friend of Barb Starosiak's (who taught our family French in the past). She referred me to you as we both have an interest and heart for Rwanda. In fact my husband and I just took 6 others from our church to Uganda/Rwanda for 3 weeks. We visited our sister church in Kibuye, also on Lake Kivu, a ways north of you I gather. I too am trying to learn Kinyarwanda and having a difficult time, especially finding speakers here in the US! I hope to return next summer. I look forward to living there vicariously through your blog. God bless you and your family as you follow the Lord!! Imana Ishimwe!!! Lisa Kannapell
