“The Harvest is Plentiful
But the Workers are Few.
Ask the Lord of the
Harvest,
Therefore, to send out
workers
into His Harvest Field.”
-
Jesus,
from Matthew 9:37
I
was privileged to meet four sweet harvest workers this week, while spending a
few hours at the Mennonite Guest House in Nairobi. Ruthie and I were on our way to see Stephen
for his jr-sr banquet at RVA. Because it
had been over a day since our last shower, and we had no idea if there would be
one handy that we could use at RVA, we stopped en route for some much needed
“hygiene help” and lunch at the guest house before driving on to his
school. (Yes! They let you come, just for a shower, free of
charge, even if you’re not staying with them!
How cool is that?)
Anyway,
while we were at the guest house, we met this wonderful group of Harvest
Workers. I only remember one of their
names – Amy, the brown hair, curly headed one in the pictures. I met her because I bummed some shampoo off
of her for our much appreciated showers!
J
We
started talking, and I discovered she was here for her annual trip to South
Sudan, to bring desperately needed medical care to the Sudanese there. They usually bring a team of about 10 doctors
and nurses for this trip, but due to the political climate, only four die-hards
came this year. Here is a picture of all
the supplies they were bringing in to that country. I got to hear of some of the procedures they
usually experience: fistula repair,
rescuing young girls (age 11ish and up) in hard labor who are too small to
deliver their babies (getting the child out not only saves the baby, but the
mother as well – as otherwise, the mother and baby will die after a few days of
hard, exhausting and impossible labor), infected tooth abscess extractions, and
other emergencies. They also help girls
caught in prostitution, who have given birth to babies, to a ministry which rescues
them to out of their slavery, provides food, clothing, shelter, rehabilitation,
counseling and education for the mothers (age 10-18) AND for their little
babies.
You’d
think they might be scared about where they were headed, or what they would
face. But no, they weren’t. They were just excited to get going, thankful
that God was using them in this way, and excited for their driver to pick them
up and begin their trek back into Sudan.
They
will be bringing the gospel of Jesus and also His healing touch to hundreds of
South Sudanese this week. What a great
opportunity for all of us – we can join in their mission by remembering them in
prayer. Will you please share this need
with your church, and lift up these awesome people?
Hey Linda, it's Mariana Hernandez; Pablo's youngest daughter. You probably don't remember me, but we met at YoungLife. My dad showed me this blog about the work you and your family is doing in Africa and for as long as I can remember I have always wanted to do missionary work there. I was wondering if I could be of any help; I am willing to pay for ALL of my expenses. I really admire the work you guys are doing and I would absolutely love to be able to be a part of that. I am currently going to the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio to major in Biology; I am going into the zoology field. Africa has always held a very special place in my heart; I would like to work with the animals and show people that they are God's creation and that they were put in our charge to take care of them. I understand that in this situation the main priority is the people; so if you think that I could be of any help, please prayfully consider me. Thank you very much. My family and I will continue to pray for you.God bless.

Dear Mariana,
DeleteOf course I remember you!!! How could I forget? First, let me apologize for my abysmally S-L-O-W reply to this comment. I am so sorry! Our internet is so slow here, and it has been difficult for me to get back to this post so I could see your comment and click "reply". I hope you see this reply, as you may not look for it, it is so old!
I think it is awesome that you want to go into zoology. I love animals and agree with you that they are God's beautiful creation and we SHOULD take care of them and be better stewards of what He has entrusted to us! Bravo for you for doing this!
I would love to have you come out here and live with us in our home and do whatever you feel God is calling you to do. I'd love to host any and all of your family! Thank you for your prayers. We will be in the usa in mid July through August. If you'd like, we could meet and talk then. My time will be crammed full with family visits, dental appointments for all, other doctor appointments, shopping for necessities, etc., but we could certainly arrange a Starbucks meet up or some such thing!~ Thanks for remembering me, and I do hope you get this message! Just fyi, it is much easier for me to reply if I know your email. If you email me at bergfamilyafrica@gmail.com, I can easier access that and reply to it than I can to these messages on the blog. God bless you! Please give my love to your mom, dad and sister!
